On August 19th, Beijing time, NBA reporter Marc Stein revealed that following the Pacers’ first trip to the NBA Finals in 25 years this spring, head coach Rick Carlisle has agreed to a multi-year extension with the franchise.
Carlisle came back to lead the Pacers in the 2021-22 season, when the team recorded one of its poorest campaigns ever, ending with a 25-57 record. However, the team has steadily improved since then, winning 35 games in the 2022-23 regular season, 47 in 2023-24, and reaching 50 wins this past season.
Under Carlisle’s guidance, the Pacers have consistently made deep playoff runs—advancing to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2024 and, this year, reaching the NBA Finals for the first time since 2000.
Including Carlisle’s current tenure with the Pacers and his previous four-year stint from 2003 to 2007, his overall regular season record with the team stands at 338 wins and 318 losses (a 51.5% win rate), while his playoff record is 41 wins and 34 losses (a 54.7% win rate). He has led the Pacers to the playoffs in five out of eight seasons.
Beyond his time in Indiana, since 2001, Carlisle has also served as head coach for 15 years with Detroit and Dallas, coaching a total of 1,197 regular season games.
Details of Carlisle’s new contract have not been disclosed, but reports indicate he signed a four-year deal in 2021 and received an extension in 2023. Since his original contract expires this year and both extensions are described as “multi-year,” it is reasonable to expect he will remain with the team for several more seasons.
