Well, this moment was inevitable.
Wall has formally declared his retirement. Born on September 6, 1990, he’s approaching his 35th birthday.
Wall confirmed the news on his social media, saying: "Retired but never stopped, continuing on in Wall’s style."
As a top pick in 2010, Wall’s NBA journey began in the 2010-11 season and ended in 2022-23. He played for the Wizards, Rockets, and Clippers, averaging 34.9 minutes, 18.7 points, 4.2 rebounds, 8.9 assists, and 1.6 steals per game in the regular season. In the playoffs, he averaged 38.8 minutes, 21.9 points, 4.3 rebounds, 9.8 assists, 1.7 steals, and 1.1 blocks. He made five All-Star teams and one All-NBA selection, among other achievements.
At his peak, Wall was considered the top point guard in the East, especially during his best years with the Wizards in the 2016-17 season. He averaged 23.1 points, 4.2 rebounds, 10.7 assists, and 2 steals per game in the regular season, and 27.2 points, 3.7 rebounds, 10.3 assists, 1.7 steals, and 1.2 blocks in the playoffs. He was a true two-way player who could energize his whole team, a type of point guard rarely seen in today’s league.
On January 9, 2019, Wall underwent surgery on his left heel to address an Achilles issue and chronic tendon damage. Less than a month later, on February 6, the Wizards announced that Wall had slipped at home and suffered a torn Achilles tendon. Two major injuries in such a short span completely derailed Wall’s career while he was still at his peak.
In August 2022, Wall publicly shared that after facing an Achilles injury, the loss of his mother and grandmother within a year, and other emotional struggles, he had thoughts of ending his life. Fortunately, with support from friends and effective therapy, he managed to improve his mental health.
During his 13-year NBA career, Wall earned a total salary of $276 million. His two biggest contracts were a five-year, $84.87 million extension with the Wizards in 2013, and a four-year, $171 million extension in 2018.
What more can be said? Wishing Wall all the best as he shines in this new chapter of life. Life is about much more than basketball; there are many wonderful things that can inspire us to keep moving forward bravely.
