The Proteas will have their captain Temba Bavuma returning to strengthen their middle order, and he gave a rather straightforward response when asked about his team’s plans for the match.
“The plan for the next game is simply to win,” he said to reporters on Tuesday. “From a mental approach, nothing changes when you aim to win the game.
“We don’t treat the opposition any differently. The same routines are followed. So really, nothing changes.”
It is yet to be decided where Bavuma will bat, but he might open the innings and believes there is definitely a place for skilled stroke players like himself in ODI cricket, where it’s not just about smashing sixes.
“There is always a need for good batting technique,” he remarked. “I know there’s a big focus on players hitting sixes in the middle order, but some solid batting is necessary.
“Where I fit in, usually in the top three, I’m flexible and will play wherever is best for the team.”
The Raipur ground has a larger playing area than the first match in Ranchi, where a total of 681 runs were scored.
“It definitely looks bigger than Ranchi, especially the square boundaries, so I expect running twos and threes to be important,” Bavuma commented.
“From a batting perspective, you’ll need to run singles and doubles. From a bowling angle, using the longer square boundaries strategically will be key.”
South Africa is aiming for their first ODI series win in India since 2015.
