Hey everyone, this is Xiaodi from Gaming.
Luyana has been a subject of debate since her release. Her early game damage is extremely low, making it hard to pressure lanes and clear waves, so many players quit after a few games. Those who stick with her usually pick physical penetration runes like Eagle Eye and Mutation to boost early damage, but it still doesn't solve the early game weakness. Recently, some players have discovered a new build that better addresses Luyana's early game issues and also takes advantage of her high magic damage scaling. Let's check it out.

If you've read Luyana's skill descriptions carefully, you'll notice that her skills have a high magic damage scaling. But most current builds completely ignore magic damage and go for full physical. The new approach is to better utilize the magic damage aspect. For runes, replace Eagle Eye and Mutation with Basha and Lingshan, both of which are tank runes. For blue, you can use Fanrong. For red runes, usually still take Huoyuan or Hongyue, because crit damage boost is significant for Luyana. However, if the match is a hard pressure situation, like against Shield and Lu Ban, you won't be able to crit much, so consider swapping to Suming.

As for items, the build is mostly the same as the standard one. The main difference is starting with Lightning Dagger instead of the Endless set. The most important thing is to get Magic Pen boots. Then just build normally. You can keep the Magic Pen boots until you finish Dawnbreaker, then swap to Ninja Tabi later.
What's the payoff of this build? Before you get the Magic Pen boots, your damage is slightly lower than the traditional Eagle Eye build. But the advantage is that you are much tankier. Later, when you swap to Ninja Tabi after Dawnbreaker, you can stack over 250 bonus armor, and nearly 300 with Suming rune. Then you can add a health-based damage item like Ghostblade, Windforce, or Master Sword. This gives you the tankiness of an extra armor item, while still using full damage items. The final damage is only a tiny bit less than the full physical build with Eagle Eye, almost negligible.

Now you might be wondering: can other marksmen use this trade-off of tankiness for penetration? Actually, other marksmen can also try it, but the three best suited are Luyana, Agu Duo, and Sun Quan. Luyana, as we said, is hybrid damage. Agu Duo can release jungle monsters, so early damage isn't a concern, and later he can just go Infinity Edge and Dawnbreaker. For Sun Quan, his first skill clears waves fast without losing last hits, and early team fights don't expect him to oneshot. In late game, he needs to get close to deal damage, so tankiness is crucial.

However, some marksmen can't easily change their runes. For example, Erine, even though she has hybrid damage, benefits greatly from double penetration, so she should keep using penetration runes. Most other marksmen are also not ideal. Unless the match is clearly going to be a tough lane, it's better to stick with Eagle Eye, otherwise you'll either have slower wave clear or significantly reduced poke ability, both of which are bad.

So here's the question: are you going to use this build for Luyana? If you've already tested it, drop a comment and let's discuss.
