To provide off-season viewers with matches to watch, the official LOL organizers invited teams from various regions that failed to qualify for Worlds to participate in the Nirvana World Tournament. Many LPL fans applauded the officials for catering to the audience. However, an unexpected event shocked many LPL supporters: the LPL powerhouse JDG actually “blew up” in this Nirvana tournament, suffering consecutive heavy defeats to LCK and Vietnamese team GAM, setting the worst international record in LPL history and becoming the first LPL team to lose a best-of-three series to a Vietnamese team (previously WE and TES only lost in best-of-one).
Following JDG’s disastrous performance, many LPL fans began criticizing JDG’s management and players, saying they don’t deserve their high salaries. After all, GAM’s network latency and player salaries are both inferior to JDG’s, yet GAM dominated JDG in a best-of-three. Of course, some viewers believe JDG’s loss to GAM was entirely due to the team tanking, with some even citing pre-match conversations between JDG’s jungler Xun and ELK as evidence.
Before the match, Xun admitted that the Nirvana World Tournament was forced upon JDG’s main roster by the organizers, and he personally did not want to participate. The prize money was minimal and the tournament held no prestige, so JDG’s entire team didn’t take it seriously, with many players unwilling to even play practice matches. Xun’s careless attitude also upset many LPL fans, especially since the whole tournament lasts only about a week. Many fans couldn’t understand why LCK teams would rather skip holidays to practice, while LPL teams kept finding excuses to avoid scrims.
After JDG failed to win a single game internationally, it became the first LPL team to be eliminated from the tournament, leading many LPL fans to joke that “the LPL region is doomed.” WBG veteran player Liu Qingsong also criticized the tournament before it began and revealed that WBG’s entire roster didn’t practice either. Many LPL fans worried WBG would face the same fate as JDG and miss the playoffs. However, WBG proved their strength with results, crushing DK 2-0 and becoming the only LPL team this year to remain undefeated internationally.
Every year before Worlds, Riot Games officially releases a theme song and MV to build hype. But with S15 Worlds approaching, the MV and theme song haven’t been released yet, causing curiosity among many LOL fans who accused Riot of “slacking off.” However, foreign bloggers revealed that the delay was due to a certain player’s public remarks “insulting women,” forcing Riot to remove that player’s scenes from the MV.
As more fans followed the story, Riot explained the MV delay was caused by FLY’s core player Bwipo’s public interview remark stating, “Women are unsuitable for competition due to menstruation.” This upset many female players, leading Riot to remove Bwipo’s footage from the Worlds MV. Furthermore, Bwipo’s team revoked his entire prize money and donated it to organizations supporting women in esports.
WBG’s dominant victory over DK at the Nirvana World Tournament shows their high potential. If WBG hadn’t been countered by JDG, they might have qualified for Worlds. Do you think WBG has a chance to win the Nirvana World Tournament? Also, do you believe Riot’s sanctions against Bwipo were justified?
