Vietnamese billiards player shatters world record with extraordinary performance at the World Cup billiards event

On the evening of October 9th in Antwerp, Belgium, player Bao Phương Vinh delivered one of the most remarkable performances in the history of the World Cup carom 3-cushion billiards. Not only did the Bình Dương native secure a spot in the main round, but he also set a new world record for average scoring efficiency.

In the fourth qualifying round—the final stage before entering the official group stage—Bao Phương Vinh was placed in Group A with David Pennor from Sweden and Joseba Escribano from Spain. After a 40-40 draw against Escribano in his opening match, the Vietnamese player had to win the decisive game against Pennor to keep his hopes alive. Under intense pressure, he delivered a rare peak performance in his career.

On his very first inning, Bao Phương Vinh scored 3 points. But it was on his second inning that he ignited the arena with a consecutive 25-point run—a figure extremely rare in World Cup tournaments. Spectators and referees at the other seven tables stopped to focus on the Vietnamese player’s table, waiting for him to break the 28-point world record that has stood for more than three decades. Although he stopped at 25 points, Bao Phương Vinh made history by concluding the match after only four innings with a dominant 40-5 score.

With this achievement, Bao Phương Vinh reached an average scoring rate of 10 points per inning (AVG) — significantly surpassing the old record of 6 points per inning held by legend Semih Sayginer within the official events of the World Carom Billiards Federation (UMB). Previously, world number one Dick Jaspers had achieved a similar average in the German League, but since it is not organized by UMB, it is not recognized as an official record.

After the match, Bao Phương Vinh stated: “I just tried to stay as focused as possible. When the balls lined up well, I played by feel. Only when I reached the 25th point did I start noticing the record, which made my hand a bit shaky and caused me to miss an easy shot. Otherwise, the score could have been even higher.” He raised his cue amidst loud applause from the Belgian audience, while his opponent Pennor came over to hug and congratulate the “new record holder.”

Although he was unable to break the 28-point series record recognized by Guinness, the 10-point average per inning allowed Bao Phương Vinh to enter the round of 32 as the winner of Group A with tremendous morale. Along with him, players Chiêm Hồng Thái and Nguyễn Trần Thanh Tự also passed the qualifiers to compete in the main round. Thus, Vietnam has a total of five representatives in the Antwerp World Cup group stage: Trần Quyết Chiến, Trần Thanh Lực, Chiêm Hồng Thái, Nguyễn Trần Thanh Tự, and Bao Phương Vinh.
