Center-back Harry Maguire disclosed that despite multiple proposals, he decided to remain loyal to MU. Even though his contract is about to expire, he wants to extend his stay with the Red Devils going forward.
Harry Maguire stated that Manchester United rejected all bids for him this past summer and hinted at the possibility of a longer commitment through a new contract.
The English defender is entering his seventh season at Old Trafford since joining from Leicester City for a fee of £80 million (107.7 million USD) in 2019.
Last January, MU activated an extension clause in Maguire’s contract until 2026. However, according to him, this did not stop some clubs from approaching him during the summer transfer window.
“I believe a few clubs contacted or negotiated with MU, but I’m confident they received a swift response,” Maguire shared.
“I’m certain the club made it clear that I wouldn’t be leaving this summer, no matter which clubs made inquiries. With my current contract, I’m staying here. We are in a positive state, and so is the club. I feel the new management, Jason Wilcox and the coach, have steered the team in the right direction. Compared to six years ago when I arrived, the structure behind the management team is completely different now.”
If MU hadn’t triggered the extension, Maguire’s contract would have expired this summer. Now, entering the final year, he can freely negotiate with clubs outside the Premier League starting January 1 if no new deal is reached.
Nevertheless, the 32-year-old implied that he wants to remain at Old Trafford.
“Last year, that clause was in the club’s hands, so I had no choice. There were no negotiations; they just needed to activate it to extend the contract. This year is different; my contract expires at the end of the season. I’m sure in the coming months we’ll have to sit down to discuss an extension, or when the transfer window reopens in January.
I have my own vision of what I want to achieve and who I want to become, but I’m not ready to reveal everything yet. This is a fantastic club to represent, and it would be ridiculous to want to leave as soon as possible,” Maguire affirmed.
