Công Phượng is highly likely to be selected for the Vietnam national team in September.
The Vietnam national team will regroup on August 29th alongside the U23 Vietnam team. While the U23 squad is the main focus preparing for the 2026 AFC U23 Championship qualifiers, the senior team will only gather for closed friendly matches against two domestic clubs instead of official FIFA Days fixtures.
Specifically, the Vietnam national team will not play official international friendlies in September but will hold two closed training matches against Thep Xanh Nam Dinh and CAHN, scheduled for September 4th and 7th. The call-up lists for both the U23 and senior teams are expected to be announced soon, with fans eagerly awaiting the inclusion of Công Phượng's name.
There are several reasons why Công Phượng could make a comeback to the Vietnam national team this September. Firstly, his preseason form has been impressive, scoring 2 goals in 4 recent friendlies with Truong Tuoi Dong Nai. He is fully fit and may be given a chance after previous setbacks due to injury.
Additionally, since the Vietnam national team will only play training matches against Nam Dinh and CAHN in September, coach Kim Sang Sik has every reason to experiment and call up players like Công Phượng to assess their form and how well they adapt to the team’s playing style.
Moreover, with many young forwards such as Quoc Viet, Dinh Bac, and Thanh Nhan busy with the U23 team, and Bui Vi Hao, Van Toan, and Xuan Son sidelined by injuries, Công Phượng’s chances of returning to the senior national team are clearer than ever.
In June 2025, coach Kim Sang Sik first summoned Công Phượng to the Vietnam national team in preparation for the Asian Cup 2027 qualifier against Malaysia. Unfortunately, Công Phượng was injured and had to leave the squad. Hopefully, this September will see the former HAGL star make his debut under coach Kim Sang Sik.
