Manchester United is nearing the acquisition of 23-year-old Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp. He has already accepted a five-year contract, and the clubs are close to agreeing on the transfer fee, which may be resolved through performance-related bonuses.
Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Manchester City has no interest in pursuing Lammens, as they already have young keeper James Trafford. If Guardiola sells Ederson, their target will be 26-year-old PSG player Donnarumma, who is set to leave Paris after falling out with the club.
Romano stated: "I don’t know where the rumors about Manchester City chasing Lammens come from, but City has never pursued him. Why? Because their real target is Donnarumma. Once Ederson moves to Galatasaray, City will sign Donnarumma. The negotiations between Manchester United and Antwerp for Lammens are progressing very well."
This transfer might trigger a chain reaction. Galatasaray is also interested in Lammens, but if they secure Ederson, they won’t compete for the Belgian youngster. Naturally, if forced to choose between the Turkish champions and the English Premier League’s 15th place, Lammens prefers Manchester United!
According to the UK’s Daily Mirror, Galatasaray made a last-minute bid hoping to outbid Manchester United. Despite Galatasaray offering Champions League football and a guaranteed starting position, Lammens still wants to join Manchester United. Other interested clubs include Lille and Inter Milan, but his heart is set on the Red Devils.
Regarding the negotiations between Manchester United and Antwerp, Romano added: "The talks are going very smoothly. Antwerp’s asking price is €25 million (£22 million). Currently, the offer is about €20 million (£17 million) plus add-ons. The structure and fees are still being discussed, and no final agreement has been reached yet. Manchester United has already agreed terms with the player; Lammens has accepted the contract offer."
Lammens is young for a goalkeeper but still trails behind Belgian legend Courtois. Courtois left the Belgian league at 19 for Atlético Madrid in La Liga and immediately became their number one. In comparison, despite having more experience, Lammens may not be guaranteed a starting spot at Manchester United initially, as he will have to compete with André Onana.
However, Lammens’s transfer is unrelated to Onana’s future. Manchester United expects the 29-year-old Cameroonian goalkeeper to stay this summer, as there is little time left in the transfer window to find him a new club. If United decides to offload a goalkeeper, 27-year-old Altay Bayındır is a more likely candidate due to his lower transfer fee and wages, making him easier to sell or loan out.
Romano confirmed Onana’s status at Manchester United: "Progress has been made in the negotiations to complete the Lammens deal, but even if this transfer goes through, it does not mean Onana will leave. This deal is currently unrelated to Onana’s future."
Sir Alex once said a great goalkeeper can earn 15 points per season. According to Opta, last season Lammens prevented up to 17.4 goals in the Belgian league! His standout quality is his calmness in goal. When asked in late July if he was ready to join a top club like Manchester United, Lammens said: "Manchester United is one of the top clubs. But who knows? Anyway, I will try to stay calm. When a club like that comes calling, I believe I deserve it and I’m confident."
