Andre Onana has rejoined Manchester United’s lineup and is expected to start against Fulham, amid intense scrutiny on the goalkeeper spot following the first match of the season.
According to Manchester Evening News, Ruben Amorim included Onana in the 21-player squad traveling to Craven Cottage to face Fulham. This marks the first time the Cameroonian goalkeeper might start a game this season, replacing Altay Bayindir, who faced heavy criticism after a mistake that led to the decisive goal against Arsenal at Old Trafford. Although both goalkeepers are in the squad, Amorim has kept his final choice under wraps, but Onana is considered the frontrunner for the starting role.
Since joining Man United from Inter Milan, Onana has been under pressure due to inconsistent performances. Unconvincing displays and injuries during the pre-season have further cast doubt on his position. However, with no new goalkeeper signings yet, he still has a chance to regain confidence if he makes the most of this opportunity.
Meanwhile, Man United is negotiating to sign young goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp. The deal, worth around £17 million, could be finalized soon and bring fresh competition to the goalkeeping department. If Lammens joins Old Trafford, Bayindir’s place will be most at risk, while Onana is almost certain to remain at least until the end of the season.
Onana’s return comes at a time when Man United needs defensive stability. Although new attacking signings have strengthened the team, to compete at the top of the Premier League, they require a reliable last line of defense. With experience gained from success at Ajax and Inter, Onana is expected to seize this chance to reaffirm his value.
If he starts against Fulham, it will be a crucial turning point for Onana in proving he deserves the number one spot at Old Trafford. A strong performance will not only help him regain fans’ trust but also solidify his position before Man United officially adds another goalkeeper in the transfer window.
