Manchester United continued their disappointing start to the new Premier League season by only managing a 1-1 draw against Fulham. The main focus after the match was the captain Bruno Fernandes' missed penalty.
In the first half, the Red Devils had a chance to take the lead with a penalty awarded. However, Bruno Fernandes sent the ball over the crossbar, missing the opportunity to put the visitors ahead. Notably, just before the penalty kick, the Portuguese player collided with referee Chris Kavanagh while stepping back to take his run-up, forcing him to reposition the ball and repeat his usual penalty routine.
After the match, Bruno Fernandes stated he did not blame the referee for the miss but expressed frustration over not receiving an apology from Mr. Kavanagh. Bruno Fernandes said:
“I was annoyed. When taking a penalty, you always have your habits and personal routines you need to follow. I felt irritated because the referee didn’t apologize. That was what upset me at the moment, but it’s not why I missed. I struck the ball very poorly; my foot hit the lower part of the ball too much, so it flew over the bar.”
This match saw MU take the lead in the second half thanks to a shot by Leny Yoro, which deflected off a player and left Fulham’s goalkeeper helpless. However, the Red Devils’ joy was short-lived as Emile Smith Rowe equalized for the hosts, ending the game at 1-1.
With this result, Man United still have not secured a win in the 2025/26 Premier League season. Previously, they lost 1-2 to Arsenal at Old Trafford in the opening round. After two matches and only one point, coach Ruben Amorim’s team continues to worry fans with their inconsistent form.
Bruno Fernandes admitted his disappointment: “We cannot be satisfied with just one point. We came here to win. The whole team defended well; they had one chance and scored. For us, it’s really disappointing not to win today’s match.”
