Real Madrid keeps demonstrating their great form under Xabi Alonso by winning 3-0 away at Real Oviedo in La Liga's second round. Following the game, the Spanish manager shared key intentions for Rodrygo and Mastantuono for the 2025/26 campaign.
During the away match at Real Oviedo, Xabi Alonso made significant rotations in the lineup. Dani Carvajal and Antonio Rudiger returned to the starting eleven, replacing Trent Alexander-Arnold and Eder Militao. Up front, Franco Mastantuono made his first start wearing the Real Madrid jersey, while Rodrygo was also given a chance to return after missing the game against Osasuna. Conversely, Brahim Diaz and Vinicius Junior had to give way, although Vinicius still made an impact by scoring the final goal to seal the 3-0 victory after coming off the bench.
Kylian Mbappe once again proved his class with a brace, helping Real Madrid assert their dominance. However, for many Real fans, Rodrygo’s comeback along with Mastantuono’s promising performance was the most encouraging sign.
After the match, coach Xabi Alonso reassured fans about Rodrygo’s future. The Spanish strategist confirmed to MARCA: “Rodrygo had a strong performance. He linked up very well with Carreras, Arda, and Kylian. To me, he remains an essential part of Real Madrid’s squad.”
Not only Rodrygo, but Xabi Alonso also praised Mastantuono, the young talent making his first start but leaving a significant impression: “Mastantuono played excellently. He showed great energy and a fantastic connection with the whole team. I believe he will bring a lot of value to Real Madrid this season.”
By confirming that Rodrygo will not leave and that Mastantuono will not be sent out on loan, Xabi Alonso is clearly outlining a plan to rejuvenate and diversify Real Madrid’s attack. Currently, the coach has many versatile attacking stars like Vinicius, Mbappe, Rodrygo, Diaz, Arda Guler, and Mastantuono. This promises multiple tactical options for Real Madrid in their quest for titles in the 2025/26 season.
Following the win against Real Oviedo, Real Madrid will return to Santiago Bernabeu to host Mallorca at 02:30 on August 31 (Vietnam time), before entering a break for international fixtures in early September.
