Coach Arne Slot made notable remarks about his counterpart Eddie Howe ahead of the Liverpool vs Newcastle clash.
Following an emotional victory in their opening match, Liverpool will head to Newcastle for their second Premier League game.
In the pre-match press conference, Coach Arne Slot addressed the situation of striker Alexander Isak, who will definitely miss the upcoming match and was linked with a transfer to Liverpool this summer. Slot stated he does not feel sorry for his colleague Eddie Howe for missing out on Isak, as Howe still possesses many quality attacking players in his squad.
Specifically, Slot said: "I have a good impression of Eddie Howe because he is a wonderful person who always behaves politely. It’s probably no coincidence that I have messaged him before, as I truly regard Howe as a sincere, kind, and respectable colleague.
However, aside from that, I don’t see a reason to feel sorry for a coach who still has talented players like Anthony Gordon, Jacob Murphy, Anthony Elanga, and Harvey Barnes. A manager with such a strong roster clearly doesn’t require sympathy."
Additionally, Slot revealed that he feels closer to Eddie Howe than any other Premier League coach. Liverpool’s sporting director, Richard Hughes, who worked with Howe at Bournemouth, gave Slot Howe’s phone number. Previously, the Dutch coach openly admitted Newcastle fully deserved their victory over his team in the Carabao Cup final last March.
Although uncertain if the relationship between the two clubs is somewhat tense at the leadership level, Slot believes he and Howe will continue to maintain mutual connection and respect.
The 46-year-old coach added: "Eddie Howe is the only Premier League coach I have ever texted. In the Netherlands, I have messaged a few others, but after the League Cup final, we exchanged some messages.
If we meet again, I will behave just like last year and don’t expect anything different from him. At a higher level, I’m not sure, but for me, my relationship with him remains unchanged."
Liverpool is the biggest spender in the Premier League this summer transfer window with blockbuster signings like Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike.
Nevertheless, The Reds are reportedly still looking to add a quality striker, with Alexander Isak linked. The Swedish star also wishes to join Anfield, but Newcastle’s management blocked the deal, leaving Isak’s future at St James’ Park uncertain. Currently, the transfer is at a standstill as the summer window nears its close.
The match between Newcastle and Liverpool will take place at 2:00 AM tomorrow (August 26).
