Breaking: Barca at risk of losing Dani Olmo until the end of 2025

Barcelona's chances of fielding Dani Olmo this season are jeopardized, with the club possibly unable to register him because of LaLiga's financial fair play constraints.

Currently, Barcelona is striving to comply with the strict 1:1 rule from La Liga, which requires clubs to balance their wage limits in order to register new players. This barrier complicates the registration of Dani Olmo, goalkeeper Joan Garcia—who was chosen to replace the long-term injured Ter Stegen—and even target Marcus Rashford, putting their signings at risk of not being finalized.

Dani Olmo's case is particularly complicated. After moving to Camp Nou, he was temporarily allowed to play thanks to a ruling from the Spanish Sports Justice Court in April 2025. This decision enabled Olmo to participate in the final matches of last season and the first two rounds of the 2025/26 La Liga season. However, La Liga has appealed and taken the matter to the National Court. The official verdict is still pending, leaving Olmo's future at Barcelona uncertain.

September 1, 2025, marks a critical deadline. It is the start of the new fiscal year in Spain and also the closing day of the summer transfer window. If Barcelona meets the 1:1 financial requirements before this date, they can cancel Olmo's temporary registration and register him properly. But if they fail, two negative scenarios may unfold.

The first scenario is if the National Court rules in favor of La Liga on September 1, Barcelona would have to re-register Olmo before the transfer window closes at 11:59 pm the same day—a nearly impossible task due to the tight timeframe. The second, worse scenario is if the ruling against Barcelona comes after September 3, Olmo's temporary license will be revoked, meaning he cannot play until the winter transfer window reopens in January 2026.

This instability could severely impact Hansi Flick’s plans. Dani Olmo is considered a key piece in rebuilding Barcelona’s attack, especially because of his creativity and versatility across multiple offensive positions. Losing him for several months would be a significant blow to Blaugrana’s ambitions in both La Liga and the Champions League.

Barcelona is racing against time to find financial solutions, which may include reducing the wage bill, selling players, or restructuring contracts. However, with September 1 approaching and no clear progress, the risk that Dani Olmo will be sidelined until January is very real. This presents a tough challenge for Camp Nou’s management in their effort to steer the team back to success.
