Legend Wayne Rooney has issued a warning that coach Ruben Amorim must quickly secure victories or risk losing his job.
Manchester United remain underwhelming, earning only one point from the first two Premier League matches despite spending £200 million in the summer transfer window. Amid growing pressure, legend Wayne Rooney criticized coach Ruben Amorim, stating the Portuguese manager no longer has any excuses.
Since his appointment in November 2024, Amorim has managed 29 Premier League games but collected just 28 points, a statistic that leaves “The Red Devils” fans uneasy. Last season, although Man United reached the Europa League final, they finished a disappointing 15th in the league. According to Rooney, signs of stagnation continue this season, especially after the draw with Fulham where the team quickly declined following a promising start.
“There are no more excuses for Amorim; he must start delivering results immediately. By October or November, if things haven’t improved, the pressure on Amorim will be immense. Man United needed a strong start this season, but only having 1 point after two games is truly concerning.” Rooney said on the program The Wayne Rooney Show.
When asked if Amorim is the right choice for Man United’s long-term project, Rooney was cautious: “It’s hard to say 100% at this point. I don’t think anyone can be certain, not even Ruben. The recent transfer window was generally good, but I still wanted 2-3 more players. Based on current performance, it’s difficult to see him as the coach for the next five years.”
Rooney also expressed concern that some old problems remain unresolved despite Amorim having a full pre-season: “The worrying sign is that we’re seeing the same mistakes as last season. He’s had time to work with the players and brought in quality signings, but progress is unclear. Players are frequently shifted around, causing instability in the lineup. The three-center-back system is still easily breached, especially on set pieces, and every corner kick raises worries about the goalkeeper.”
According to Rooney, what Man United needs most right now is unity and resilience to overcome pressure: “At the start of a new season, everyone must forget last year’s failures and move forward together. But it’s worrying that after just two games, gaps and lack of focus have already reappeared.”
Man United currently has only 1 point after two rounds, and if performance does not improve soon, Ruben Amorim’s future at Old Trafford will certainly be in serious doubt.
