Coach Kim Sang Sik reveals plans with Vietnamese overseas star Đỗ Chung Nguyên

Coach Kim Sang Sik intends to analyze the playing approach of Vietnamese overseas player Đỗ Chung Nguyên to help him fully utilize his abilities in the U23 Vietnam squad.

Ahead of the 2026 AFC U23 Championship qualifiers, Coach Kim Sang Sik announced the U23 Vietnam squad. Alongside experienced players who recently won the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 Championship, the Korean strategist also called up a notable overseas Vietnamese talent, midfielder Đỗ Chung Nguyên (Trần Thành Trung), who was developed at CSKA Sofia’s academy, has played professionally since 2013, and previously represented Slavia Sofia’s first team in the Bulgarian top league before returning to join Ninh Bình Club in the V-League.

Coach Kim Sang Sik revealed that he will analyze Đỗ Chung Nguyên in the near future to determine the best way to utilize him.

"Our coaching and analysis team closely monitors players competing abroad. Before announcing the U23 Vietnam call-up list, we thoroughly researched players playing overseas, including Đỗ Chung Nguyên. I have included him in the list and will use the upcoming training camp to test and study this player,"said Coach Kim Sang Sik.

Additionally, Coach Kim Sang Sik expressed gratitude to the chairman of Ninh Bình Club for fully supporting Vietnamese players abroad to return and continue contributing to the development of national football.

According to the draw results, the U23 Vietnam team is placed in Group C alongside Yemen, Singapore, and Bangladesh. The matches of this group will be held at Việt Trì Stadium (Phú Thọ) from September 3 to 9, 2025. The U23 Vietnam team will regroup on August 29, 2025, to prepare for the tournament. With relatively manageable opponents in the group, U23 Vietnam’s goal is nothing less than securing a ticket to the final tournament.
