Ahead of the Leagues Cup semifinal, Inter Miami's coaching team provided positive information about Lionel Messi's status.
Lionel Messi missed the last two matches for Inter Miami as coach Javier Mascherano chose to rest him for full recovery from a muscle injury sustained during the Leagues Cup match against Necaxa.
Despite the captain's absence, Inter Miami managed a draw in MLS and, more importantly, secured a win in the Leagues Cup, advancing to the semifinals against Orlando City. Before the match, assistant coach Javier Morales brought good news to fans by confirming that both Messi and Jordi Alba have fully returned to training without any issues.
Specifically, he stated: “Jordi and Leo trained with the entire squad and completed the session very well. We will monitor how they feel today and tomorrow before making a decision for the match. The positive thing is that both have been training; now we just need to wait a bit longer.”
He also mentioned that the final squad list hasn't been decided yet but expressed confidence that Messi will be included. “We hope he will participate. With muscle injuries, the key is how the player feels the next day. I believe Messi will play, but we haven’t submitted the roster yet,” Morales added.
Previously, Jordi Alba suffered a knee injury in the quarterfinal against Tigres and had to leave the field early. Therefore, Mascherano rested both the Spanish defender and Messi in the recent MLS match to ensure they are in optimal condition for the semifinal.
Earlier, Messi also had to leave early in the group stage match against Necaxa and was expected to miss about three games. However, the Argentine superstar returned in the third game, coming on at the start of the second half against LA Galaxy and immediately scoring a stunning goal.
This season, Messi remains the cornerstone for Inter Miami across all competitions. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has scored 25 goals and provided 11 assists in 32 appearances, helping Inter Miami reach the Leagues Cup semifinals and rank sixth in the MLS Eastern Conference with three games in hand.
Looking ahead, Messi’s main task is to help the Florida-based team overcome Orlando City to reach the Leagues Cup final and pursue the club’s third-ever title.
