Grimsby Town created many difficulties for Man City prior to their victory over Man Utd in the Carabao Cup.
Grimsby Town, a fourth-tier English club, made the biggest surprise in this season's Carabao Cup when they impressively defeated Man Utd, eliminating the Premier League side to advance to the third round.
Notably, before causing a shock against the most successful club in England, Grimsby Town had also surprised another Manchester team, Man City.
Specifically, in October last year, Grimsby Town troubled Man City's U21 squad in an EFL Trophy match, a competition for clubs in England’s third and fourth tiers along with some U21 teams from Premier League and Championship clubs.
In that match, Grimsby Town showed resilience and only conceded a goal in the 89th minute. However, in stoppage time at 90+1 minutes, the fourth-tier team equalized, forcing the game into a penalty shootout. There, Man City's young players performed better and won 5-4 overall.
Nearly a year later, Grimsby Town again proved to be a tough opponent for Man Utd, and this time they celebrated victory. Remarkably, Grimsby Town’s squad value was only around 3.6 million Euros, a fraction of the "Red Devils" squad value (887 million Euros).
This highlights how Grimsby Town’s players delivered a memorable performance against some of the world’s top stars, and this win is considered one of the most unbelievable results in the history of the Carabao Cup and English football.
Returning to the match, Grimsby Town ended the first half with a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren.
In the second half, coach Ruben Amorim had no choice but to bring on key players to increase attacking pressure, hoping to turn the game around.
At the 75th minute, Mbeumo reduced the deficit for Man Utd, reigniting hope for the visitors. Just minutes before full time, Harry Maguire headed in from a corner to level the score at 2-2.
With no winner after 90 minutes, the match went to a tense penalty shootout. Despite relentless efforts, Mbeumo missed again on the decisive kick, resulting in Man Utd’s exit with an 11-12 loss. Meanwhile, Grimsby courageously secured their place in the third round.
