Grimsby Town's goalkeeper Christy Pym showed unbelievable feelings following his team's victory over Man Utd in the Carabao Cup.
Grimsby Town, a League Two side in England, caused one of the biggest upsets in British football when they overcame Man Utd in the second round of the Carabao Cup, thus eliminating their opponent and advancing to the third round.
During more than 90 minutes at Blundell Park Stadium, goalkeeper Christy Pym delivered an outstanding performance against some of the Premier League's top attackers. This was reflected clearly in the defensive stats recorded by SofaScore which showed the keeper making as many as 7 crucial saves.
However, this was not all the goalkeeper achieved. In the nerve-wracking penalty shootout, while Grimsby Town was at a disadvantage, Christy Pym made a precise dive to block Matheus Cunha’s shot, who is considered a specialist in taking penalties. This save not only revived Grimsby’s chances of progressing but also boosted the morale of his teammates for the subsequent kicks, ultimately leading the League Two side to a final victory.
After the match, Christy Pym admitted he is a Man Utd fan but believed he could have performed better in the shootout beyond just one save.
The 1995-born goalkeeper said: "I still can't believe it. Being a Manchester United supporter, I feel a bit disappointed. But nights like this are exactly why you play football. It’s amazing.
I probably could have done a bit better in the shootout, right? I made one crucial save to keep us in the game, and my teammates took care of the rest. Truly incredible."
Earlier, Christy Pym and his teammates enjoyed a fantastic first 75 minutes, leading Man Utd by two goals thanks to strikes from Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren. However, Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire each scored important goals to level the match and push it to penalties.
In the shootout, both teams went all the way to the 13th kick, where Mbeumo’s missed shot handed Grimsby Town a 12-11 win, securing their place in the third round.
