Manchester United officially announced Onana's loan to the Turkish Super League! It is revealed that he feels scapegoated and will not return next year.

As planned, Manchester United officially confirmed on Thursday that goalkeeper André Onana has been loaned to Turkish club Trabzonspor. The club will not pay any loan fee nor have a purchase option, but will cover Onana’s full wages. Thanks to Turkey’s favorable tax rates for players and bonus clauses, Onana has achieved a salary increase.

According to British media, after representing Cameroon in World Cup qualifiers, Onana flew to Paris, France, where he met with his wife Mélanie and agent before traveling together to Istanbul to undergo a medical and sign the contract. Onana received a warm welcome from local Trabzonspor fans, who gathered around him to celebrate his arrival, and they ended up dancing together.

“I’m very happy, truly very happy,” Onana said. “I’m starting a new chapter, and this is an entirely new adventure for me. I feel great coming here. This feeling brings me immense joy. I’ve never experienced so much love from those around me. From the very first moment, I felt a warm sense of belonging, and that feeling is wonderful.”

Onana is expected to make his Turkish Super League debut this weekend. He said, “I hope to start working as soon as possible and repay the fans with strong performances on the pitch to make them happy. All meetings and discussions have gone very smoothly. The outcome was ideal, and I arrived here quickly.”

After two seasons of underwhelming performance, Manchester United finally parted ways with the disappointing Onana in the eyes of fans. The 29-year-old Cameroonian goalkeeper initially expressed a clear desire to stay and fight for his position, but now he has agreed to a loan move to Trabzonspor for the remainder of the season. Although there is no purchase option, his future at the Red Devils is completely bleak.

Following Manchester United’s shocking elimination from the League Cup by League Two side Grimsby, Ruben Amorim finally decided to take action. Onana was directly involved in both goals conceded in that match. The club signed 23-year-old Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens at the last moment of the summer transfer window while offloading Onana.

Onana was naturally unhappy about this. According to “Insight Offside,” he feels he has been made a scapegoat for the poor form of other Manchester United players. Moreover, Onana still believes he is superior to the club’s new Belgian signing Lammens, as well as the original Altay Bayındır and Tom Heaton.

Premier League transfer expert Graeme Bailey revealed that Onana knew as early as August that he might leave, but he remained confident he could reclaim the number one goalkeeper spot. However, with Lammens’ arrival, the club clearly indicated he would only be the third-choice keeper.

At that point, Onana fully realized he could no longer stay at the club, and his team began actively searching for a new club. Cameroon is set to compete in the Africa Cup of Nations at the end of the year and possibly the World Cup next year. Wanting playing time, he accepted the transfer.

It is reported that even if Onana performs well at Trabzonspor, Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos group has no plans to bring him back to the team. Onana still has three years left on his contract. The club hopes he can regain his previous form to raise his market value, which would help them sell him to the highest bidder next year.

British media believe Onana’s fate is not undeserved. His behavior in his first match under Ralf Rangnick set a negative tone for his future. He arrived with a €50 million transfer fee under Ten Hag’s request, hailed as a “revolutionary goalkeeper” who could completely change the team’s tactics.

In a friendly against Dortmund, Maguire made a passing error, and Onana jumped up angrily to scold him. Maguire remained calm despite the rebuke. Some Manchester United fans appreciated the new goalkeeper’s “leadership qualities,” while others felt such drama was unnecessary in a friendly match.

However, this act obviously did not make Onana popular in the locker room. More importantly, the expensive goalkeeper’s own mistakes increased afterward. In the Premier League opener, Manchester United nearly lost three points due to his recklessness. Onana came out to punch the ball away but struck Wolves player Saša Kalajdžić’s face instead, missing the ball. The referee’s missed call saved him from punishment.

Many fans initially hoped he would bring tactical changes, but unfortunately, he has struggled to back up his flashy personality with solid performances. Given how he treated Maguire, teammates had every right to complain and resist him.

Onana’s attitude is a major reason why he is unpopular at Old Trafford. He was unhappy that his weekly wage dropped from £170,000 to £120,000 due to missing out on the Champions League, meaning his actual take-home pay is only £67,000 per week. He supports many people in Cameroon and has established the Onana Foundation. Therefore, despite criticism of his performance, his agent still demanded a raise this summer.

This is also one reason why Onana surprisingly chose to play in Turkey. Thanks to signing bonuses, performance incentives, and lower taxes, Onana’s net salary at Trabzonspor will increase, likely doubling his actual income.

Finally, when Manchester United and Manchester City face off in the Premier League Manchester derby this Sunday, the two former main goalkeepers, Onana and Ederson, will also compete 1,700 miles away as Trabzonspor and Fenerbahçe happen to meet in the same round.
