Barcelona's manager Hansi Flick took a jab at Real Madrid just before the 2025 Ballon d'Or event.
Real Madrid has multiple nominees on the list Ballon d'Or 2025, notably featuring Kylian Mbappe, who scored 44 goals and provided 5 assists in 59 appearances across all competitions last season.
However, the club that has won the Champions League 15 times again skipped the Ballon d'Or ceremony this year, marking the second consecutive season they did not attend. It is known that Real Madrid also declined to participate last year after their key forward Vinicius Jr failed to win the prestigious award.
In this context, Hansi Flick believes every club should attend to show respect to the award winners: “It is very important to be present and show respect to the winners,” The German coach was quoted by The Touchline.
Last year, midfielder Rodri from Manchester City and the Spanish national team was honored after an outstanding season for both club and country.
Nevertheless, Real Madrid did not leave empty-handed last season as coach Carlo Ancelotti was named “Coach of the Year” and the Royal Club was awarded “Team of the Year.”
However, the Spanish giants again missed this year’s ceremony, partly due to scheduling conflicts. Real Madrid has a La Liga match against Levante one day after the awards event.
Currently, Real Madrid leads the La Liga standings by 2 points over Barcelona ahead of their away game against Levante.
Historically, Real Madrid players have won the most Ballon d'Or awards while representing a single club, with 8 players earning a total of 12 awards since the first ceremony in 1956. Barcelona also has 12 awards, but only 6 different players won while wearing the Catalan club’s jersey.
Legendary Lionel Messi still holds the absolute record, having won the Ballon d'Or 8 times in his career.
