Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, recently awarded the Yashin Prize at the 2025 Ballon d'Or event, candidly discussed his move from Paris Saint-Germain to Manchester City during the past summer.
This marks the second time in his career that the keeper born in 1999 has received this prestigious honor, having first won it in 2021. Alongside his joy over the victory, Donnarumma also attracted attention with heartfelt remarks about his decision to leave Paris Saint-Germain last summer to sign with Manchester City.
When asked about his true desire, Donnarumma was straightforward: “Yes, I did want to stay at PSG. When you share so many positive moments, have close bonds with teammates and friends, leaving is always difficult. There I met wonderful fans, excellent players, coaching staff, the head coach, sporting director, and even the president. That’s why I once wanted to stay long-term.”
During the 2024/25 season, Donnarumma played a key role in helping PSG win the Champions League for the first time in their history. However, the Italian goalkeeper was no longer part of the club’s long-term plans after refusing to renew his contract. Consequently, on September 1st, he officially joined Manchester City in a high-profile transfer.
Though feeling regretful, Donnarumma affirmed he is happy representing Manchester City: “But then I found another fantastic club with outstanding players. They welcomed me as part of a big family, and that means a lot. Change is never easy, but here I’ve met amazing fans and a special team. I hope to give my all for Man City and win many trophies.”
After receiving the award from legend Gianluigi Buffon, Donnarumma emphasized this as a special milestone in his career: “This is a unique award because it’s the second time I have earned this prestigious title.”
Joining Manchester City, Donnarumma is expected to be the perfect piece in the quest for more major titles under coach Pep Guardiola. With consistent form, impressive reflexes, and strong match temperament, the 26-year-old goalkeeper promises to continue asserting his status in the coming years.
