Arsenal's striker Viktor Gyokeres has officially been honored with the Gerd Muller Trophy, awarded to the world's best goal scorer of the past season.
At the award ceremony The Ballon d'Or held in the early hours of September 23 (Vietnam time), Viktor Gyokeres proudly received the Gerd Müller Trophy thanks to his outstanding performances for both club and country during the 2024/25 season.
This award, previously known as "Striker of the Year" or "Top Scorer," has been given since 2021 to honor the player with the highest number of goals in a season, counting both European club and national team matches.
Playing for Sporting Lisbon and the Swedish national team, Viktor scored an impressive 54 goals in just 52 games, leading the European scoring charts. This achievement was key in helping Sporting win the Primeira Liga and Taca de Portugal titles, as well as making him the top scorer of the 2024/25 Nations League.
Last year's winners were Kylian Mbappé and Harry Kane, each netting 52 goals for their clubs and countries in 2024. Earlier, Erling Haaland won the award in 2023 with 56 goals, while Robert Lewandowski claimed it in 2021 and 2022 with a phenomenal 69 and 57 goals respectively.
Besides the good news from Gyokeres, Arsenal was also honored as the best women's club of the past season.
This award recognizes Arsenal's historic 2024/25 season when they lifted the UEFA Women’s Champions League trophy after defeating Barcelona in the final.
After leading Group C with a perfect 15 points from 6 matches, Arsenal Women staged a remarkable comeback in the quarterfinals, overturning a 0-2 deficit to win 3-2 against Real Madrid in an unforgettable night at Emirates Stadium. The semifinals were just as dramatic, as they came from behind 1-2 against Lyon to win 4-1 on French soil, advancing with a 5-3 aggregate score.
This ability to rally was also evident throughout the Women’s Super League campaign, where coach Renée Slegers inspired the team to thrilling 4-3 victories over Manchester City, West Ham, and Manchester United, finishing as runners-up in the league.
