Former Arsenal defender Nuno Tavares is currently experiencing a difficult time at Lazio.
Joining the Italian capital club Lazio on a permanent deal for about 4 million Euros after a loan spell, Tavares was expected to be a key defensive addition for coach Maurizio Sarri. However, his start to the 2025/26 season has been disappointing.
In the highly important Rome derby against AS Roma last weekend, it was Tavares who made a silly mistake by missing the ball just outside his own penalty area, leading to Lorenzo Pellegrini’s only goal and Lazio’s 0-1 defeat.
On Sky Italia, former star Paolo Di Canio openly attacked the Portuguese defender: “Without Tavares’ mistake, the derby could have ended in a draw. Everyone knows Tavares is the type of player lacking intelligence, even though he can sprint quickly when given space.”
Di Canio believes the 25-year-old defender lacks judgment and composure under pressure: “He needs to understand that against certain opponents, you can’t play the same way as before. If Roma presses and Tavares cannot find a solution, he will harm the defense. Arsenal had good reason to sell him cheaply.”
Despite heavy criticism, Tavares still has undeniable strengths, such as his ability to push forward and carry the ball at speed. Last season, he made several important contributions to Lazio when used appropriately.
Experts suggest that Tavares’ issues lie in tactical adaptation and defensive discipline, areas Sarri must address to fully utilize the ex-Arsenal player’s potential.
At 25 years old, Tavares still has time to develop himself. But if he doesn’t fix mistakes like the one in the Rome derby, he will continue to be the target of harsh criticism from legends and fans alike.
