The Ho Chi Minh City women's club needs to be particularly alert because the FVS system will debut at the AFC Women's Champions League.
According to the latest information, the AFC Women's Champions League 2025/26 will officially introduce the Football Video Support (FVS) system starting from the Group Stage (November 9–23, 2025). It should be noted that this FVS system has similarities and differences compared to VAR technology.
Specifically, teams will have 2 opportunities to request the use of the FVS technology during a match, plus 1 additional chance if the game goes into extra time. Upon request, the main referee will review the slow-motion footage. If the team's appeal is correct, their right to request FVS remains unchanged. If the appeal is incorrect, one FVS request will be deducted.
FVS is quite similar to the "challenge rule" in other sports such as tennis, volleyball, basketball, and badminton. Teams unhappy with a referee's decision can request a video review. If the challenge is valid, the right to challenge is retained; if not, the number of challenges is reduced.
Therefore, FVS differs significantly from VAR. Throughout the match, VAR can intervene in any situation to advise the main referee without the teams’ requests. However, like VAR, FVS is only applied to: goals, penalties, direct red cards, and cases of mistaken identity.
The application of the Football Video Support system at the AFC Women's Champions League 2025/26 is part of FIFA's extended trial phase, highlighting AFC’s commitment to improving refereeing decisions and developing women's football in Asia.
Vietnam has one representative at the AFC Women's Champions League 2025/26, which is Ho Chi Minh City club. AFC has conducted the group draw for the 12 teams participating in the group stage of the 2025/26 Asian Women's Club Championship. Accordingly, Huỳnh Như and her teammates will compete in Group A alongside Melbourne City (Australia), Stallion Laguna (Philippines), and Lion City Sailors (Singapore). The group matches involving Ho Chi Minh City women's club will also be hosted in Vietnam.
