Former Manchester United midfielder Anderson is facing a 30-day prison sentence in Brazil for failing to pay over £140,000 in child support.
Ex-Manchester United star Anderson has landed in serious legal trouble in his native Brazil after a court ordered him to serve jail time for neglecting his child support obligations. According to local media, the amount Anderson owes exceeds £140,000.
The ruling was issued on September 3 by a family court judge in Porto Alegre, a southern Brazilian city where the former MU player resides. However, the news was only made public by the media on September 22. If Anderson does not settle the outstanding debt, he will face 30 days in prison.
According to The Mirror, the former midfielder who won the Premier League four times with Man Utd will be held in a "closed" regime, meaning he will be confined to his cell under strict supervision. If local prisons are overcrowded, he might be placed under a "semi-open" regime, allowing him to leave for study or community work during the day but requiring him to return at night.
Currently, Anderson and his legal team have not issued an official response. Anderson’s lawyer, Julio Cezar Coitinho Jr, confirmed the case involves a minor but declined to provide details due to court confidentiality. Anderson had four children in 2015, but by early 2024, that number had grown to nine.
During his career, Anderson was known as one of Brazil’s promising talents who joined Man Utd under Sir Alex Ferguson. He transferred from Porto in 2007 and won multiple titles with the Red Devils, including four Premier League championships and one Champions League. However, recurring injuries and inconsistent form led to a decline before he left the club to return to Brazil to play for Internacional in the 2014/15 season.
Notably, in an interview last year, Anderson revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo “looked after” him when he first arrived in England. Along with fellow countryman Nani, he lived at Ronaldo’s house for nearly a year, receiving full support from daily life to training. Anderson admitted that both he and Nani were “supported by Ronaldo” and did not have to spend any money during that time.
Beyond club football, Anderson earned eight caps for Brazil, participating in the 2007 Copa America, where the Seleção won the title. He also competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where Brazil secured a bronze medal.
Now, Anderson faces off-field controversy related to his personal responsibilities. If he does not promptly resolve the child support arrears, the former Man Utd star could soon serve actual jail time.
