Despite Marcus Rashford’s strong start with Barcelona, Paul Scholes openly condemned him for his behavior at Manchester United, labeling it as an “inexcusable disgrace.”
Throughout his commentary career, Paul Scholes has been known for his bluntness and willingness to make controversial remarks. This time, the Manchester United legend targeted Marcus Rashford, the player currently wearing the Barcelona jersey on loan from the Old Trafford club.
Rashford left United after clashing with coach Ruben Amorim and was seen as part of a “disruptive squad.” His final match for the Red Devils was a 2-1 victory over Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League on December 12, before moving to Aston Villa for the latter half of the 2024-25 season. Now in Spain, Rashford has already made an impact at Barcelona, scoring twice against Newcastle in the Champions League, with the second goal regarded as one of the most beautiful strikes of the season.
However, Paul Scholes insists he finds it hard to be happy for Rashford. On the podcast The Good, The Bad & The Football, he bluntly stated: “There’s no doubt about his talent, it’s ridiculous, the second goal was fantastic. But honestly, I struggle to feel happy for him.”.
Scholes emphasized that the issue isn’t Rashford’s ability, but how he left Old Trafford: “Mainly because of his attitude at United. When he left, I thought it was a disgrace, basically because he stopped trying. If you argue with the coach, that’s fine, but remember you still have teammates and tens of thousands of fans in the stadium. Every week, you need to show some effort.”.
The former Red Devils star also did not hide his disappointment: “Many times I saw Rashford give up at United, I think his entire attitude was shameful. He truly quit at Manchester United. And once you’ve given up once, you’ll do it again.”.
At 27 years old, Rashford is rediscovering his form at Barcelona, but Scholes’ harsh comments reveal a rift in his relationship with his former club. This will surely motivate Rashford even more to prove himself in La Liga, where Barca is set to visit Real Oviedo.
Rashford can score stunning goals and shine in the Champions League, but for legends like Scholes, his legacy at Manchester United is overshadowed by his “giving up” during his final period at Old Trafford.
