Former Manchester United star calls on club management to sack Ruben Amorim, identifies a suitable new coach

Manchester United is under pressure to make a coaching change as former striker Teddy Sheringham calls on the club’s leadership to consider bringing in former England coach Sir Gareth Southgate to replace Ruben Amorim.

Ruben Amorim is facing intense pressure at MU

Last season, under Amorim’s leadership, Manchester United finished 15th in the Premier League – their worst performance in decades. The 2025-26 season has not improved, with the team winning only 2 of their first 5 matches.

Amorim was appointed to replace Erik ten Hag in November 2024, but his arrival did not immediately end the crisis. United not only sits in the lower half of the Premier League table but also lost to Tottenham in the Europa League final, losing their spot in European competitions this season.

Sheringham urges the “Red Devils” leadership to consider bringing back former England coach Sir Gareth Southgate to replace Ruben Amorim

During the summer 2025 transfer window, the club spent heavily to strengthen the attack with signings like Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, and Bryan Mbeumo.

However, the team’s performance has not improved much: United currently sits 11th with 7 points and was even eliminated from the Carabao Cup in the second round by Grimsby Town, a League Two side.

In this situation, Teddy Sheringham believes Southgate could be the right solution if the club decides to part ways with Amorim. Speaking on Coin Poker, the former star said:

"Looking at the prominent managers who have led Manchester United since Sir Alex Ferguson, most have failed in trying to advance the club in their own way. I know many fans still doubt Gareth Southgate’s style, but with what he has achieved with England, I believe he can help steer the Old Trafford ship back onto a stable path."

Sheringham further emphasized: "Manchester United remains the pinnacle of English football. I think Southgate understands the enormous scale of this role, having managed the national team for eight years."

"He will know how to handle pressure and has the capability to carry the mission of restoring United to their rightful status. I do not wish for Ruben Amorim or any coach to lose their job, but choosing Gareth to rebuild the club is definitely not a bad option."

Still, Amorim’s position has temporarily steadied after United recovered from a heavy loss to Manchester City by defeating Chelsea 2-1 in the Premier League last weekend.

At present, there are no indications that the “Red Devils” management will change the coach before the season ends. Nevertheless, the 40-year-old Portuguese coach continues to face criticism for his inflexible philosophy and tactical system management.
