After failing to sign Mike Maignan last summer, Chelsea will likely have to compete with Manchester United for AC Milan's goalkeeper. The Red Devils are also seeking an experienced option to reinforce their goalkeeping department.
Chelsea is considering renewing their interest in Mike Maignan, AC Milan's first-choice goalkeeper, after a failed £25 million bid in the summer. The 30-year-old Frenchman is expected to be an attractive target as his contract with AC Milan expires at the end of this season.
However, Chelsea is not the only team targeting Maignan. Manchester United is closely monitoring the situation, with coach Ruben Amorim wanting a more experienced goalkeeper than newcomer Senne Lammens. Last summer, the Red Devils spent £18.2 million to bring Lammens from Belgian club Royal Antwerp, but the keeper has yet to make an appearance for Old Trafford. Instead, Altay Bayindir has started all five Premier League matches this season, securing his number one spot.
Meanwhile, Chelsea is facing problems in goal. Robert Sanchez’s early red card in the 1-2 loss to Man United last weekend at Old Trafford once again exposed the defensive weaknesses of the team. The lack of a reliable goalkeeper has forced The Blues to reconsider the Maignan deal, known for his excellent reflexes and extensive experience in Serie A and the Champions League.
As for Manchester United, former number one goalkeeper Andre Onana has made it clear he does not wish to return to the club after joining Trabzonspor on loan. This further motivates Old Trafford to find a new goalkeeper who can both support Lammens and ensure quality between the posts.
If the deal goes through, Maignan would be a valuable addition to any team. For Chelsea, he could solve their goalkeeping issues, while for MU, Maignan would bring the necessary experience to compete in the Premier League and European competitions.
Currently, both clubs are evaluating the possibility of signing him, while waiting for Maignan’s contract to approach its deadline at the end of the season. The goalkeeper’s future in the next transfer window promises to be intense and highly competitive.
