Match result - Liverpool achieved an exciting victory against Southampton in the Carabao Cup third round fixture.
From the very first minutes, the home side launched an intense attack. In the following minutes, Southampton fought back strongly. Adam Armstrong and Leo Scienza repeatedly fired dangerous shots, yet Liverpool’s goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili remained firm.
After many attempts to break through, the turning point came in the 43rd minute. Goalkeeper McCarthy made a critical error, allowing Alexander Isak to easily slot the ball into an empty net, putting Liverpool ahead 1-0. This goal boosted the home team’s confidence before the break.
In the second half, Liverpool continued to dominate. Hugo Ekitike consistently caused trouble with daring dribbles and shots, even scoring once, but it was disallowed for offside. However, Southampton refused to give up. In the 76th minute, Joshua Quarshie delivered a precise cross for Shea Charles, who fired a sharp shot to equalize 1-1, dampening the atmosphere at Anfield.
But less than 10 minutes later, order was restored. In the 85th minute, Federico Chiesa broke free and assisted Hugo Ekitike, who finished to secure a 2-1 victory for Liverpool. Although Ekitike was later sent off with a second yellow card, the Reds maintained their lead until the final whistle.
This result ensures that coach Arne Slot’s team officially advances to the Carabao Cup fourth round.
