Striker Alexander Isak shared some remarkable remarks after netting his first goal, contributing to Liverpool's progression in the Carabao Cup.
Liverpool secured a hard-fought victory against Southampton, a team competing in the Championship, during the third round of the Carabao Cup.
The highlight of the 90 minutes at Anfield was the debut goal from new signing Alexander Isak for Liverpool. The Swedish forward demonstrated sharp finishing with a delicate one-touch strike to open the scoring for The Kop, marking his first goal in his new colors.
After the match, Isak couldn’t hide his joy over the goal but also admitted he could have performed better on the pitch.
Specifically, Isak said: "It’s wonderful. Returning to the pitch and scoring my first goal at Anfield was special, especially with the team winning. A perfect evening.
I probably could have scored earlier, but that’s the job of a striker — sometimes you miss, sometimes you score. The most important thing is to quickly forget and be ready for the next chance.
I just try to play my way without overthinking. I trust that things will go the right way, and when opportunities come, I will take them. That’s the mindset I always keep. Today, I’m happy I managed to do that."
Notably, this was Isak’s third game for Liverpool in less than a week. The 1999-born striker started twice, including his Champions League debut against Atletico Madrid.
The €145 million "blockbuster" confirmed he can perform well if given regular chances and maintain his physical condition.
Isak added: "I feel I’m in very good shape. Each match benefits me, improving my fitness and match sharpness. I clearly feel more prepared after every game. Right now, I feel strong enough to make a difference on the field."
After Isak’s opener near the end of the first half, Liverpool continued to dominate in the second. However, Shea Charles’ equalizer in the 76th minute surprised the Anfield crowd. Still, order was restored when Hugo Ekitike sealed a 2-1 win in the 85th minute, securing Liverpool’s place in the Carabao Cup fourth round.
