After an underwhelming first game with Benfica resulting in a 1-1 draw versus Rio Ave, various reports indicate that Coach Jose Mourinho intends to reinforce the team in the near future.
Jose Mourinho experienced his first official game as Benfica’s head coach. Despite playing at home, the Lisbon-based team managed only a 1-1 draw against Rio Ave after conceding an equalizer in the 90+1 minute. This result meant Mourinho couldn’t secure a winning debut and highlighted several issues in Benfica’s gameplay, especially defensively.
Previously, the “Special One” was appointed to replace Bruno Lage after Benfica’s defeat to Qarabag in the Champions League opener. Mourinho returned to Portugal after managing Fenerbahce but was dismissed due to failures in European competitions.
According to journalist Ekrem Konur, Mourinho is planning squad reinforcements in the upcoming transfer window. Specifically, he aims to make a double signing, bringing in two familiar players: striker Karim Benzema (Al Ittihad) and left-back Ferland Mendy (Real Madrid).
Benzema had a highly successful period playing under Mourinho at Real Madrid. Although 37 years old, the French striker continues to demonstrate scoring ability, netting a hat-trick in his first Saudi Pro League match this season. Konur mentions Benfica might spend between 5-7 million Euros to acquire this veteran forward.
Not only Benzema, Mourinho also wants to bring Ferland Mendy to Lisbon. The French left-back joined Real Madrid from Lyon in 2019 but is currently the third choice behind Alvaro Carreras and Fran Garcia. Mendy still has extensive experience, having played 32 matches last season with two assists, but he is no longer a regular starter at Bernabeu.
After 6 rounds, Benfica ranks third in the Portuguese league, trailing leaders Porto by 4 points. The draw against the weaker Rio Ave indicates that the “Special One” needs more time and personnel to build a satisfactory team.
Targeting Benzema and Mendy signals Mourinho’s intent to combine experience and quality to bring Benfica back to the top, not only domestically but also in European competitions. The “Eagles” fans eagerly await a transformation from the team in the remainder of the season.
