MU has confirmed it is investigating an incident involving a fan renowned for the challenge of “not trimming his hair until the team secures 5 straight victories,” who was attacked at Old Trafford during the Chelsea game.
Manchester United is conducting an inquiry after a video surfaced showing one of their fans being attacked by another supporter during their 2-1 victory over Chelsea last weekend at Old Trafford.
The victim, Frank Ilett, took on a unique personal challenge: to refrain from cutting his hair until MU achieved five consecutive wins under coach Ruben Amorim. Since October 2024, his increasingly massive curly hair has made him popular on social media, attracting hundreds of thousands of followers. He is even known by the nickname “The United Strand”.
However, amid the energetic atmosphere of the Chelsea match, what seemed like a harmless challenge turned into the cause of an unfortunate incident. According to the Daily Mail, another fan grabbed Ilett’s hair and shoved him in the stands area, accompanied by abusive language. The entire episode was recorded and quickly spread on social media, sparking outrage among the fan community.
MU’s management confirmed they are working with security forces to identify the perpetrator. The club emphasized it will impose strict disciplinary measures if the offender is found, as they aim to ensure a safe and respectful environment for all spectators attending the stadium.
Meanwhile, Frank Ilett’s challenge remains unfinished. Notably, the last time MU achieved a streak of 5 consecutive wins was in February 2024, under Erik ten Hag. Currently, coach Ruben Amorim’s team has only recorded two wins this season and must overcome Brentford, Sunderland, Liverpool, and Brighton in the next four matches to complete the goal.
The incident at Old Trafford once again raises concerns about stadium security measures in England. For MU, besides sporting challenges, they also face pressure to maintain their image and protect fans—key elements in the club’s rebuilding journey.
