Bad news for Barcelona as Gavi will be sidelined for up to 5 months following knee surgery.
Barcelona has officially confirmed that midfielder Gavi may be out for as long as 5 months after undergoing knee surgery. The 21-year-old player missed most of the 2023 season due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury. Now, Gavi faces more misfortune as his meniscus knee problem is more serious than initially expected.
The young Spanish star had only recently returned from a severe injury over a year ago, but this time he must stay off the pitch for an extended period again. Gavi has not played for Barcelona since August because of this injury, and although the Catalan club initially hoped surgery would be unnecessary, they now admit he is unlikely to return before early 2026.
The club's statement read: “First team player Pablo Paez Gavira ‘Gavi’ underwent arthroscopic surgery to treat a deep meniscus injury. The tear was sutured to preserve the meniscus. The estimated recovery time is approximately 4-5 months.”
A top product of La Masia, he has proven his importance to both Barcelona and the Spanish national team since his debut in 2021. However, with this severe injury, Gavi might have to race against time to regain his form ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
In 2022, Gavi was honored with the Golden Boy award by Tuttosport magazine, given to the best under-21 player competing in Europe. This accolade was seen as the perfect stepping stone, confirming the young midfielder’s status as a promising talent in Barcelona’s and La Roja’s new generation.
Yet, from that shining moment, Gavi now faces a real nightmare. Repeated injuries, especially to his knees, are directly threatening the career that has only just begun. The prospect of this bright talent fading early due to injury is no longer distant but a constant worry for fans and Barcelona alike.
While Gavi begins his recovery process, coach Hansi Flick’s team will return to La Liga on Thursday with an away match at Oviedo. Over the weekend, Barca will host Real Sociedad before facing Champions League champions Paris Saint-Germain next week.
