Europe’s Great Club Regrets Missing Out on the €125 Million Blockbuster

Bayern Munich confesses disappointment at not securing Florian Wirtz, Liverpool’s €125 million recruit.

Florian Wirtz became the focal point of the recent summer transfer window after choosing to join Liverpool with a record-breaking deal. However, Bayern Munich, who fiercely competed to acquire the talented midfielder, still harbors regret. Recently, Bayern’s supervisory board member Karl Heinz Rummenigge candidly admitted that the failed deal with Wirtz still “hurts” him.

Liverpool paid as much as €125 million to Bayer Leverkusen to sign the 22-year-old player. This amount makes Wirtz one of the most expensive transfers in Bundesliga history and one of the biggest headlines in Europe’s recent transfer window. Previously, Bayern had pursued Wirtz for a long time. Nevertheless, the Bavarians ultimately failed to convince the young star to join Allianz Arena.

In an interview with Sport BILD, Rummenigge could not hide his disappointment: “I must be honest, in Florian Wirtz’s case, I still feel heartache. I believe he would fit and develop better at Bayern than at Liverpool.”

According to the former Bayern CEO, the Bavarian club was fully capable financially to compete with Liverpool for this transfer. However, they deliberately chose not to engage in the price war, which is considered “crazy” in the transfer market: “FC Bayern is smart enough not to get caught up in every financial frenzy. We want success, but it must be success based on seriousness and financial sustainability,” Rummenigge emphasized.

Notably, while Bayern’s management still regrets the missed opportunity, many fans feel relieved watching Wirtz’s performance at Liverpool. After seven official matches, the 22-year-old has contributed only one assist in the Super Cup and has yet to score. The British press has even criticized, calling Wirtz’s start at Anfield a “wrong beginning.”

Nevertheless, Rummenigge remains confident that Wirtz is the perfect type of player for Bayern. He believes that if the young midfielder had joined Allianz Arena, he could have become a decisive factor in Bayern’s ambition to conquer Europe.

In this context, Bayern now places its hopes on the current squad, especially with key players returning from injury soon. Despite missing out on the Wirtz blockbuster, Germany’s top club still believes it has the strength to compete for titles in both the Bundesliga and the Champions League.

In fact, the story of Florian Wirtz not only reflects Bayern’s regret but also highlights the club’s cautious transfer philosophy. While many European giants rush into a “money storm,” Bayern sticks to its principle: prioritizing stability and sustainability instead of risking everything for a risky deal.
