Arsenal's new striker Victor Gyokeres recently shared insights about his adaptation process with the new team.
Swedish forward Viktor Gyokeres is going through a challenging period at Arsenal as he has yet to score in three matches against the “Big Six” teams this season, most recently in the 1-1 draw with Man City. However, Gyokeres himself insists that he has trained himself to stay calm and handle pressure, which has helped him earn his current position.
Gyokeres spoke to Sky Sports about his career journey: “Believe in yourself, keep moving forward no matter what happens. Whether on or off the pitch, I don't think you need to take in all the opinions around you. Keep positive energy close to you.”.
The Arsenal star recalls his early career days: “I used to play football at school. My parents took me to training, but at first, I didn’t like it much. Then they tried another club for me, which I liked better, and that’s when I got attached to football. Later, my dad even became a coach there.”.
Images of a “clumsy” Gyokeres on the field, sometimes awkward in his movements, made many doubt his potential to become the leading striker for a major European club. But that very doubt became motivation for the 28-year-old forward to rise up.
He shared an unforgettable memory: “When I was in Sweden, I played some district-level matches. I didn’t perform well, and someone told me I didn’t have the talent to pursue football. That comment haunted me, and I still remember it today.”.
That’s why Gyokeres places special emphasis on surrounding himself with “positive voices.” He stressed: “Trust yourself, keep pushing forward, don’t let what others say shake you. Keep good energy around you.”.
In a situation where Arsenal needs a striker who can score consistently, Gyokeres, although yet to score in big matches, still plays an important role against weaker opponents. This season, he has scored many goals, second only to Erling Haaland in the Premier League. The Swedish striker’s “never give up” spirit promises to continue inspiring Arsenal in their title race.
