Chelsea once again experienced a comical incident involving their goalkeeper as defender Wesley Fofana required medical attention early in the match after colliding with goalkeeper Jorgensen.
Just two minutes into the Carabao Cup match against Lincoln City, Filip Jorgensen rushed out to punch the ball but accidentally struck his teammate. The heavy collision left Fofana in pain on the ground, causing the game to pause for medical staff to attend him. Fortunately for Chelsea, the French defender was able to continue playing afterward.
This is considered one of several costly mistakes made by Chelsea’s goalkeepers this season. Fans expressed their disappointment and did not hesitate to mock the situation on social media. One supporter wrote: "Fofana just returned and got punched right in the face by Jorgensen". Another commented: "Sell Jorgensen to anyone who wants him". A bitter account said: "Just switched on the Chelsea game to see Lincoln hitting the post, then Jorgensen took Fofana out". Some were even angry: "Jorgensen knocked Fofana down, what are we doing here?". There were even opinions stating: "Jorgensen is worse than Sanchez".
Despite difficulties, Chelsea narrowly managed to advance. The Blues conceded first to Rob Street, but thanks to consecutive goals from Tyrique George and Facundo Buonanotte, they turned the game around successfully.
This season, Chelsea’s goalkeeper position has been under constant criticism. First-choice keeper Robert Sanchez has made several serious errors. He was even sent off in the defeat against Manchester United following a foul on Bryan Mbeumo. Many fans have called on coach Enzo Maresca to drop Sanchez from the starting lineup. Former star Jamie Carragher bluntly stated: "Chelsea won’t compete for the title if Sanchez remains number one".
Jorgensen joined Stamford Bridge in July 2024 from Villarreal for £20.7 million. During his time with the Spanish club, he made 12 appearances and helped win the Conference League last season. However, in the Premier League, coach Maresca has only used Jorgensen in 6 matches so far.
Additionally, Chelsea entered the Carabao Cup third round without young striker Marc Guiu on the squad list. Although eligible to play due to rule changes, the player, recently recalled to replace injured Liam Delap after a loan at Sunderland, was not included.
