Nottingham Forest had an emotional Europa League opener against Real Betis, and although they only managed a 2-2 draw, coach Postecoglou expressed satisfaction with the team's performance.
Nottingham Forest made a heartfelt return to European competition after nearly three decades, visiting Real Betis in their Europa League opening match. Despite settling for a 2-2 draw, Ange Postecoglou’s squad earned praise for their modern and coherent attacking style.
The match started at a high tempo from the outset. Cedric Bakambu opened the scoring for Betis following a beautiful combination with Antony. However, shortly after, Igor Jesus shone with a brace, putting Forest ahead. Unfortunately, Antony equalized for the home side late in the second half, denying Forest a win on their European return day.
This marks the fourth straight game without a win for Postecoglou since replacing Nuno Espirito Santo at Nottingham Forest. Nevertheless, the Australian coach remains hopeful. “I’m disappointed that the players didn’t get the reward they deserved for today’s performance. But I clearly see their progress. That’s what matters for us to keep improving,” Postecoglou shared.
He was especially impressed by Igor Jesus’s equalizer at 1-1, assisted by captain Morgan Gibbs-White. “I still see beauty in plays like that. That’s the kind of football I want my team to play, the style that makes this sport wonderful,” the 59-year-old coach added.
However, Postecoglou also admitted that Forest currently lack the “sharpness” needed to finish off matches. He encouraged his players to maintain their spirit and believes that luck and positive results will come soon if they continue with their current style of play.
Nottingham Forest will return home to City Ground to face Sunderland in the Premier League this weekend. This will be Postecoglou’s first home match in charge, and he believes the atmosphere from the stands will motivate the team to seek their first victory under his leadership.
