The future of coach Ruben Amorim at Manchester United continues to be a heated subject, with ex-goalkeeper Ben Foster cautioning that the Portuguese tactician could be at Old Trafford for just “a few more months.”
The recent victory over Chelsea somewhat eased the pressure on Man Utd, but the overall situation remains bleak. Last season, the Red Devils finished 15th in the Premier League , their worst performance in Premier League history, and suffered a painful defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League final. This season has seen little improvement. The Old Trafford side was knocked out of the League Cup in the first round by fourth-tier Grimsby and has consistently displayed a weak performance.
Speaking on the Fozcast, Ben Foster candidly stated: “I think he has only a few months left. Just a run of 2–4 consecutive losses and the club will decide: ‘Enough, it’s clear things aren’t working anymore.’ I watch Man Utd and see no cohesion in their style of play at all.”
In his comments, Foster also mentioned Oliver Glasner, the coach who led Crystal Palace to win the FA Cup last season and currently has the London club in 5th place in the Premier League. However, he remains cautious about whether the Austrian coach is truly the ideal choice: “My only concern is that Man Utd are tired of playing with three defenders. If Glasner comes and keeps the 3-5-2 formation, neither fans nor the club will accept it.”
Nevertheless, Foster admitted he is impressed by Glasner, especially since Crystal Palace lost five key players but still improved their strength, making the coach a top candidate.
Besides Glasner, many other names have been mentioned by international media and bookmakers as potential replacements for Amorim. Notably among them are former England coach Gareth Southgate, Marco Silva (Fulham), and Mauricio Pochettino, who remains highly regarded due to his Premier League experience.
This weekend, Man Utd will play away against Brentford, a match seen as a “final” for Ruben Amorim’s position. A defeat could trigger an unprecedented wave of calls for a managerial change at Old Trafford. Under immense pressure, the Portuguese coach must find a winning formula or risk having his tenure with the Red Devils cut short after just a few months.
