With this performance, Messi has increased his total contributions in the 2025 season to 37 (24 goals, 13 assists). This achievement makes him the first player in MLS history to reach 35 goal contributions in two consecutive seasons.

Not stopping there, Messi has also moved up to third place on the list of players with the most goal contributions in a single MLS season, tying with Josef Martinez and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. He currently trails only Carlos Vela’s record of 49, with 5 regular season matches remaining.

Notably, with 2 goals and 1 assist in the match against New York City, Messi officially became the player with the most games in MLS history where he both scored and assisted, totaling 17 appearances. This accomplishment allows the Argentine superstar to surpass Carlos Vela’s record of 16 games and match the number previously set by the legend Preki.

Messi’s impressive streak coincides with Inter Miami’s strong run. The victory over New York City marked the third consecutive win for coach Javier Mascherano’s team, following wins over Seattle Sounders, D.C. United, and now New York City.

Currently, Inter Miami (16 wins – 6 losses – 7 draws; 55 points) ranks behind FC Cincinnati (58 points) and Philadelphia Union (60 points) in the race but holds an advantage with two fewer games played.
