Chelsea was fined £25,000 by the English Football Association (FA) after losing 1-2 to Manchester United last weekend.
Coach Enzo Maresca's squad suffered their first defeat of the Premier League this season, as Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro helped the "Red Devils" secure a crucial win following an early red card shown to goalkeeper Robert Sánchez last weekend. The Spanish keeper was sent off in the 5th minute for a foul on Bryan Mbeumo, leaving Chelsea a man down for most of the match and unable to stage a comeback despite Trevoh Chalobah scoring a late goal in the second half.
This result came shortly after Chelsea’s loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League, and it has allowed league leaders Liverpool to extend their lead to 7 points after just 5 rounds. According to the Daily Mail, besides the defeat, The Blues also face a financial penalty from the FA.
During the bitter loss to Man Utd, referee Peter Bankes issued 6 yellow cards to Chelsea players, including coach Maresca, along with a straight red to Sánchez. Having reached the limit of 6 cards in one match, Chelsea was required to pay a £25,000 fine according to FA rules.
Last season, The Blues frequently exceeded the card limit, resulting in a total fine of £150,000 in matches against Bournemouth, Nottingham Forest, and Newcastle. Chelsea even topped the Premier League’s "warning" table over the past two seasons and currently ranks just behind Bournemouth this season.
This weekend, Chelsea will continue their Premier League campaign with an away match at Brighton. Coach Enzo Maresca will certainly need to tighten discipline to avoid further card issues, especially as the team urgently needs a win to boost morale.
