A source from Manchester United revealed that coach Ruben Amorim has made a decision regarding Kobbie Mainoo’s role within the team.
Kobbie Mainoo will serve as a backup player at Manchester United this season, amid earlier rumors suggesting he might leave during the summer transfer window. Although a last-minute deal was mentioned at one point, the 20-year-old midfielder ultimately remained at Old Trafford.
The English midfielder’s name frequently appears in transfer rumors, including reports of a record-breaking deal. However, based on his conduct off the pitch, it is clear he is determined to fight for his place in the squad.
According to a source at Manchester United, Mainoo is being prepared to partner Bruno Fernandes in central midfield. Coach Amorim has spent considerable time working with the 2005-born star on his defensive skills, focus, and discipline, aiming to build a Fernandes–Mainoo duo in the near future.
“Ruben is coaching Kobbie more on defensive abilities and responsibilities without the ball because he wants to try him alongside Bruno,” the source shared with The Sun.
“Kobbie can also play as a number 6, which is crucial given Casemiro’s inconsistent form and frequent suspensions, while (Manuel) Ugarte has yet to convince fully. Ruben highly values Kobbie’s stamina and ambition. He wants him ready to contribute in any midfield position, especially as a number 6, since the team currently lacks dynamism in that role.”
So far, Mainoo has appeared in only four matches, including three in the Premier League, but has yet to start in the league. His sole starting appearance was in the unexpected defeat to Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup last month.
Nevertheless, Amorim holds Mainoo in high regard, praising his physical foundation, football intelligence, and skills.
The source added: “Kobbie is a player Ruben really likes, but he also demands that he continues to work hard, be willing to sacrifice, and patiently wait for opportunities throughout the long season. Ruben trusts Kobbie’s talent and appreciates his full commitment in training and his passionate attitude on the field. He is especially impressed by Kobbie’s fitness, mindset, and abilities. Ruben wants to challenge Kobbie to help him improve, viewing him as a strong option for defensive midfield in certain matches. He believes playing as a number 6 will help Kobbie mature and maximize his potential.”
With Casemiro recently receiving a red card in the match against Chelsea, Mainoo is likely to be named in the starting lineup for the upcoming away game against Brentford this weekend.
Antony played so well, does Amorim have any regrets? Antony recently delivered an outstanding performance against Nottingham in the opening match of the 2025/26 Europa League. His brilliance is something MU has been missing, and sometimes fans wonder if the management’s strict approach towards him is justified. See more
