Former Arsenal star passes away due to a horrific injury on the pitch

Ex-Arsenal footballer Billy Vigar passed away after suffering a brain injury in a game at the 7th level of English football.

As previously reported, former Arsenal player Billy Vigar fell into a coma after a severe brain injury during the match between Chichester City and Wingate & Finchley in the Isthmian League Premier Division (equivalent to the 7th tier of English football) on September 20th.

In the early hours of September 26 (Vietnam time), The Guardian reported that Billy Vigar had passed away after about a week of hospital treatment. His club, Chichester, announced: “Following a serious head injury last Saturday, Billy Vigar was placed in a coma. On Tuesday, he underwent surgery to aid his recovery. Although the operation was successful, the injury was too severe for Billy, and he passed away on Thursday.”

Vigar joined Arsenal’s academy in December 2017 at the age of 14 and signed a professional contract with the Gunners in July 2022. He was loaned to Derby County, where he played for their U21 team, and also to Eastbourne Borough before joining Hastings United on a free transfer in July 2024. He signed with Chichester at the start of this season. On Thursday, Chichester announced that their home match against Lewes on Saturday had been postponed.

Arsenal posted a tribute to their former player: “Everyone at Arsenal is deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Chichester City striker and former Arsenal academy player Billy Vigar. Billy joined our academy as a 14-year-old schoolboy after being scouted from his hometown club Hove Rivervale FC and excelled as a forward at Hale End, scoring 17 goals in his first season.”

Billy Vigar was once a promising young striker for Arsenal

In 2020, his performances earned him a scholarship and a contract for the 2020-21 season. Billy continued to play for Arsenal in the Premier League 2 and EFL Trophy, proving himself a versatile talent both as a striker and even taking on defensive duties.

Beyond his considerable talent, Billy will always be remembered for his passion for football and pride in representing our club. He described the day Arsenal scouts discovered him as the most important day of his life and was a beloved figure among teammates and coaches alike. We extend our deepest condolences to the Vigar family and his friends during this very difficult time.”
