Ruben Amorim has added a promising young player from Manchester United to the senior squad, with a crucial star missing from training before the Premier League fixture versus Brentford.
Manchester United secured their second victory in the Premier League this season after defeating Chelsea 2-1 last weekend. Goals from Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro helped the Red Devils return to winning ways following a heavy 0-3 defeat to Manchester City. Currently sitting 11th in the standings, Man United will continue their Premier League campaign this weekend when they face Brentford.
Notably, a young Man United talent might be named in the matchday squad, based on the latest training session on September 25th.
According to journalist Samuel Luckhurst, Sam Mather was called up to train with the first team after Noussair Mazraoui was absent from training. He expects coach Rúben Amorim to provide an update on the Moroccan fullback’s status during the pre-match press conference on September 26th. On X, Luckhurst wrote: “Mazraoui did not appear in #mufc training photos/videos, so Sam Mather was brought up to train with the first team. Mather is naturally a winger, making him a suitable replacement for Mazraoui in the 3-4-2-1 drills. Amorim will likely update on Mazraoui’s fitness tomorrow.”
Mather is originally a winger, and as Luckhurst analyzed, he is a logical option in Amorim’s system if Mazraoui is unavailable. The 2004-born talent has impressed strongly at youth levels in England, having played a total of 93 matches across all competitions and contributing 53 goals.
Mather is a product of Manchester United’s renowned academy. He signed his first professional contract with the club in September 2021, then extended it with a long-term deal in summer 2024. The 21-year-old also joined the first team’s pre-season tour in the United States.
This winger was loaned out to Rochdale in the 2023/24 season and played for Tranmere Rovers last season. Mather has yet to make an official appearance for Manchester United but could be given a chance after training with the first team ahead of the Brentford away match.
