Former Arsenal player Billy Vigar suddenly passed away at age 21

Billy Vigar, a former Arsenal player, died at 21 after suffering a serious head injury during a match for Chichester City last weekend.

The incident occurred during an Isthmian League match against Wingate & Finchley, where Vigar sustained a severe injury causing the game to be stopped just 13 minutes in.

According to Chichester City’s statement, Vigar was immediately placed into an induced coma. On Tuesday, he underwent emergency surgery aiming to improve his chances of recovery. Although the operation had some positive effect, the injury was beyond recovery, and he passed away on Thursday morning.

Billy Vigar, a former Arsenal player, died at 21 after suffering a serious head injury during a match for Chichester City last weekend.

“The latest feedback shows how much Billy was loved and valued by everyone. His family is completely shattered by this event, especially since Billy passed away while playing the sport he always loved,” said the statement from the English seventh-tier club.

Billy Vigar joined Arsenal’s academy in 2017 at the age of 14 before signing a professional contract in 2022. During his development, he was loaned to Derby County and Eastbourne Borough, then joined Hastings United in 2024. At the start of this season, he transferred to Chichester City.

Arsenal Football Club also expressed their heartfelt condolences: “The entire Arsenal family is deeply saddened to hear about the tragic death of Chichester City striker and former academy player Billy Vigar. Billy joined the academy at 14 after being discovered at local club Hove Rivervale FC. At Hale End, he quickly made his mark as a striker, scoring 17 goals in his first season.”

“Beyond his outstanding talent, Billy is remembered for his passion for football, pride in wearing the Arsenal jersey — he once described the day scouts found him as ‘the most important day of my life’ — and a charming personality, beloved by teammates and coaches alike. We send our deepest sympathies to the Vigar family and his friends during this profoundly painful time.”
