Coach Arne Slot confirms that Liverpool's management decided to pay the entire remaining salary of Diogo Jota's contract to his family after the Portuguese striker passed away.
It is remembered that this summer, Jota and his younger brother Andre died in a car accident in Spain, causing a huge shock to the football world and his close family. He and his wife Rute Cardoso had just married 11 days earlier and had three children together. “No amount of money can compensate for this loss,” Slot shared with TNT Sports, “but the way Liverpool's owners handled it is truly admirable”.
According to the Dutch coach, the club has paid the entire remaining salary of Jota’s two-year contract to his wife and three children, estimated to be around £10–15 million. “Some might think this is normal, but in football, it’s not something you see often,” Slot emphasized.
This decision came amid Liverpool’s heavy spending in the transfer market, reaching £415 million last summer. However, as Slot mentioned, “a shared grief” has brought the management, fans, and players closer than ever before. “The way fans behaved after the tragedy, the flowers, the memorials... moved me deeply. I felt the pain of his family,” he added.
Not only Liverpool, but Jota’s close friends also expressed their responsibility. Midfielder Ruben Neves, Jota’s compatriot and longtime teammate, promised to take care of the late friend’s family. “I will make sure his loved ones never lack anything from now on and forever” Neves wrote in an emotional tribute message.
For many, Liverpool’s action is not just financial responsibility but also reflects the humanitarian culture and unity of a football community. While preparing for an ambitious new season, The Kop has not forgotten to care for and support those who contributed to the club.
That image, together with the empathy from fans across Merseyside, shows that Liverpool is not only a team chasing trophies but also a collective with a heart. And that is exactly “something rare to see” that Arne Slot proudly mentioned.
