Lionel Messi has matched a goal-scoring achievement previously set by Zlatan Ibrahimovic in MLS.
Inter Miami extended their winning streak to three games after just defeating New York City in the 31st round of the MLS. As usual, Lionel Messi was the standout star, contributing a brace and an assist, helping secure three points for the Florida-based team.
With this feat, Messi officially tied the goal-scoring record held by Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Specifically, the Argentine superstar became the fourth player in MLS history to score two or more goals in eight matches within a single season.
Previously, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who was once Messi’s teammate at Barcelona, achieved the same record while playing for Los Angeles Galaxy in 2018. Mamadou Diallo set this record in 2000 with Tampa Bay Mutiny, and Stern John was the first to do so in 1998 with Columbus Crew.
Not stopping there, Messi’s brace against New York City also helped him strengthen his lead in the Golden Boot race. He has now scored 24 goals in 23 MLS matches this season, including five goals in just the last three games.
Right behind Messi is Denis Bouanga of Los Angeles FC with 22 goals, while Sam Surridge is also making waves with 21 goals for Nashville this season.
The Golden Boot will be decided based on the regular season performance, so Messi still has five matches left to increase his tally. However, there is also a possibility that the 38-year-old star might be rested to prepare for the playoffs.
Currently, Inter Miami has officially secured a spot in the MLS Cup playoffs. Additionally, the Florida team is in contention to defend their title in the MLS Supporters' Shield, trailing Eastern Conference leaders Philadelphia by five points but having played two fewer matches.
This weekend, coach Javier Mascherano’s squad will return to action with an away match in Canada against Toronto.
