Sergio Ramos conveyed a heartfelt note to Sergio Busquets after his ex-colleague officially declared his retirement at the conclusion of the 2025 MLS campaign.
Ramos and Busquets have been closely linked to Spanish football for over a decade. Together, they experienced many highs and lows with the national team, highlighted by their 2010 World Cup victory. Despite frequently facing each other in intense El Clasico matches between Real Madrid and Barcelona, they always maintained mutual respect and a strong friendship.
When Busquets announced his retirement, Ramos dedicated a touching letter to his former teammate. On his personal Instagram, Ramos shared:"Busi, you embody excellence while staying humble and grounded. Most of the time we were rivals, sometimes teammates, but you always stood out with your classy play, vision, quality, and genuine, modest character."
Beyond praising his teammate’s talent, Ramos also expressed his regret:"Football has lost one of the finest defensive midfielders I’ve ever played alongside, but you leave with recognition and gratitude from everyone who shared this journey and all who love the sport."
He concluded his message with a personal sentiment: "Thank you for being a great player, an amazing teammate, and a close friend. Wishing you all the best in your new path. With love, brother."
At 37, Busquets officially confirmed his retirement following the 2025 MLS season. He announced his decision in a video on social media, also expressing gratitude to Barcelona, the Spanish national team, Inter Miami, and fans: "I sincerely thank everyone and football itself for everything. Football will always remain a beautiful part of this story."
Busquets is regarded as one of the greatest defensive midfielders in history. A distinguished product of La Masia, he spent 15 seasons with Barcelona, appearing in 721 matches—third most in the club’s history. He helped the Catalan club win 9 La Liga titles, 7 Copa del Rey trophies, and 3 Champions League titles.
At the international level, Busquets earned 143 caps for Spain, playing a key role in La Roja’s 2010 World Cup triumph. With his exceptional ability to read the game, control tempo, and consistent performances, he redefined the role of the modern defensive midfielder.
In the final years of his career, Busquets played for Inter Miami, reuniting with Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba, and Luis Suárez. Although his playing days are ending, Busquets’ legacy will surely be remembered as an icon in world football.
