Because Malaysia used players who violated regulations, there is a strong possibility that Vietnam's national team will be granted a victory even though they initially lost 0-4.
As previously reported, FIFA has officially decided to sanction the Football Association of Malaysia and seven players for breaching player registration rules. This concerns the match where Malaysia defeated Vietnam 4-0 in June 2025 during the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers.
Currently, FIFA has only imposed fines on the Football Association of Malaysia and these seven naturalized players. Additionally, these seven illegally naturalized players face a 12-month suspension and their eligibility to represent Malaysia’s national team in the future is under review. However, no decision has been made regarding the match result yet.
Nonetheless, it is very likely that FIFA has not yet issued a punishment for Malaysia’s national team in this match because the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers fall under the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). After FIFA’s ruling takes effect, the AFC Disciplinary Committee will review and decide on sanctions related to Malaysia’s violations in the match against Vietnam.
It is almost certain that Malaysia will be deemed to have lost 0-3 to Vietnam in this match, according to standard football regulations. Specifically, if even one player is found ineligible—due to suspension, missing transfer documents, or lack of registration—the team using that player will be penalized with a 0-3 loss.
Meanwhile, Malaysia fielded as many as seven illegally naturalized players in their 4-0 win over Vietnam, and these players significantly affected the match outcome. Therefore, the chance that Vietnam will be granted a 3-0 win is very high.
Back in March this year, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) sanctioned Sanfrecce Hiroshima by awarding a 0-3 loss in the first leg against Lion City Sailors, despite their initial 6-1 win in the AFC Champions League Two quarterfinals. This penalty arose because Sanfrecce Hiroshima used striker Valere Germain who was still under suspension by the AFC.
