Coach Enzo Maresca confirmed that Chelsea will rest Cole Palmer until the next international break due to a groin injury, leaving his participation in England’s October squad uncertain.
Chelsea’s coach Enzo Maresca provided an update on Cole Palmer’s fitness ahead of the match against Brighton at the Premier League scheduled for 9:00 PM on September 27 (Vietnam time).
In the pre-match press conference, Maresca explained that the decision to rest Palmer was made to prevent the injury from worsening: “We decided to protect Cole a bit to avoid aggravating his injury. The club will rest him for two to three weeks before the international break to see if Palmer can fully recover and return to 100% fitness after that period. I don’t believe surgery is necessary. The issue is managing the groin pain, which can happen with the intense match schedule,” Maresca stated.
According to the plan, Chelsea will rest Cole Palmer until the Premier League pauses for international fixtures due to his groin injury. However, it remains unclear if he will be available for England’s squad in October.
“I think he might, but it’s not my decision to make. If Palmer can’t play three matches for Chelsea, it’s likely he won’t be called up. But the final decision rests with the national team’s coaching staff,” Maresca responded when asked about Palmer’s chances of joining the England team.
Maresca further emphasized: “Cole always wants to play. He played against West Ham and Manchester United despite the pain. This type of injury can feel better one day and worse the next. The medical team believes the best solution is to rest Palmer for a few weeks to recover. Cole fully agrees with this approach.”
Coming up, England will face Wales at home and then travel to play Latvia. If they achieve positive results, the “Three Lions” will be very close to qualifying for the World Cup.
